- What novel uses can students dream up for straws?
- How can science principles be taught using straws instead of elaborate costly science equipment?
The prime ingredient of all your gadgets must be straws.
You may use any other materials needed such as tape, pins, rubber
bands, etc. All should be common and inexpensive. Most materials must
be supplied by your teams. Get teacher permission for any exceptions.
- Your team will be given planning and construction time in class. Some work may have to be done at home.
- Team reports will be presented orally in class.
- A short written report detailing and sketching your gadgets must be turned in at the same time.
- Plan to show one science prinicple based on straws.
Grading will be based on:
- Original and novel straw use (10 points)
- Effective demonstration of a scientific principal (10 points)
- Clear, creative class presentation (10 points)

Simple, yet so full of what kids need to do in science. I found it inspiringly “just right” which led to a collaboration idea. I posted the basic idea on my blog at A Teacher’s Thoughts. Thanks for sharing your classroom!
